Tuck, John and Eliza were the only ones at the cottage when we returned. They were quietly playing Eliza’s version of tic-tac-toe. John knew the moment we stepped into the clearing that something had happened and made us share. He and Tuck listened with their brows drawn together.

When we finished, John said, “I know better than not to believe something you tell us, Maryanne. But Lady Bridgette using a sword?” He shook his head. “I don’t think so. The nobles don’t let their women learn that sort of thing.”

“I can show you.” Bridgette’s chin jutted, but her words were soft.

John shook his head. “I don’t own a sword. Tuck’s the only one currently here who has one, and you can’t show us much on your own.”

“Well…” She stretched out the word. “I might have one hidden in the dress I was wearing when you took me.” She looked at her feet.

I stared at her with my mouth open. We’d never searched Eliza or Bridgette for weapons. We’d certainly never checked Bridgette’s pile of clothing after she removed it. None of us thought either of them were a risk in that department.

“Go on, then.” Tuck got to his feet. “Show us what you’ve got.”

Bridgette jumped up and ran into the cottage where she’d left her dress folded neatly on the ground in the back corner.

“Who’s showing us what they’ve got?” Rob strolled into our clearing with Miller close behind.

“Maryanne and Bridgette have been killing soldiers. Bridgette’s about to show us how,” said John.

Rob lifted an eyebrow.

“With her sword,” added Tuck, his tone dry.

Miller’s eyes rounded when Bridgette returned with her sword, a little larger than the one she’d used today, but not so big as what the boys used. He took a step toward her, his eyes on her weapon. “Whoa. You have a sword? Can you use it?”

Rob’s smile was confused. “You mean you’ve actually killed soldiers today?”

I nodded, and let Bridgette tell the story.

Rob’s face grew more and more serious, the longer Bridgette talked. When she was finished, he pointed his finger at me. “You are not to leave the clearing unless one of us is with you.” He glanced at Bridgette and Eliza. “None of you women are to leave the clearing.”

“Don’t be ridiculous.” I didn’t need to be wrapped in cotton wool or treated like a prisoner. We’d come away alive today. That was all that mattered. “It wasn’t even that dangerous.” Understatement. But he wasn’t ever going to tell me what I could or couldn’t do.

“To be fair, you were considering handing yourself over to the soldiers,” said Tuck.

I glared at him. Bridgette left that part out when she told Rob. I wasn’t sure if she’d just forgotten to mention it, or if she knew how Rob might react, but I’d been grateful. Should have known Tuck would do what he could to drop me in it.

“You were what?”

I shrugged. “You wouldn’t have done anything different.”

“I would have! Because I wouldn’t have walked into a fight unarmed.
